Harvard defeated Cornell on Saturday by the score of 34 to 0. Manhattan Field, on account of the heavy rains of Friday night continuing all day Saturday, was in wretched condition for football. Concerted team play, especially in offensive work, was practically impossible, and the conditions certainly favored the weaker team. Harvard's work, under the conditions, was creditable, but formed a poor basis for judging of the real strength of the team. In their defensive play, the Harvard line showed a strength and steadiness which was decidedly encouraging. Only once during the whole game did Cornell by legitimate rushing carry the ball far into Harvard's territory. Cornell used a form of flying wedge in all initial plays, and once, after Harvard's second touchdown, Curtis emerged from this wedge and made nearly 30 yards before he was downed by Brewer. At no other time was the ball in the vicinity of Harvard's goal line except from a kick.
Cornell started the game with their flying wedge, but gained little, as Curtis dropped the ball and Lewis fell on it. Short rushes brought the ball down to Cornell's 15 yard line, where Brewer lost it on a fumble. Ohl kicked for Cornell and Brewer caught it and was downed on the 40 yard line. A few moments later, however, he dashed through the right end of Cornell's line for a touchdown from which Fairchild kicked the goal. Score, Harvard 6, Cornell 0, after 7 minutes play.
Cornell again was forced to punt. Hoag caught the ball on the 25 yard line and in another five minutes Wrightington made the second touchdown. Fairchild failed on the try for goal.
It was after this touchdown that Cornell showed her strongest play of the game and Curtis was barely saved from making a touchdown by Brewer's pretty tackle. Cornell tried in vain to buck the line and Ohl kicked. Brewer muffed the ball but dropped on it, and the play was soon in Cornell's territory. A safety and three more touchdowns, the last of which was the result of two brilliant runs by Brewer, left the score at the end of the first half, 28 to 0.
It was fast becoming dark when time was called, but nevertheless after the usual rest, a second half of 10 minutes was played. Gray appeared in Brewer's place and his brilliant runs with Mackie's line breaking were the best features of the play in this half.
