Mr. L. H. Roots '91 delivered an interesting address last night in Holden Chapel on the work of the Young Men's Christian Association in the colleges of the country. He also made an impressive appeal for us here to make the most of our opportunities in this rich field.
We have every reason, said he, to feel encouraged. Ten years ago only one out of four students was a member of any church, while now more than half are members of some evangelical organization. With this growth the Young Men's Christian Association has kept apace. Besides more increase in the number of members, one of the great signs of growth is the increased interest shown in Bible study. Year before last there were 3,500 in all colleges who were studying in voluntary classes; last year there were 7,000. Today there are sixteen buildings devoted exclusively to religious purposes, and here we have the prospect of the Phillips Brooks House. All this is encouraging and we have cause to be thankful.
Speaking of the student voluntary movement for foreign missions, Mr. Roots said that there are at present 3,000 men who are preparing to be missionaries. The aim of the volunteer movement is the evangelization of the world in this generation, to provide that there shall be no place in the world that a man may not listen to the preaching of the Gospel. There never was a greater demand for educated men in the Christian ministry. Mr. Roots closed with an appeal to the members to become missionaries.
