Captain Cook called out several of the older candidates for the nine on Monday and had the same men out yesterday. For the present he will issue no general call because he wishes to make up his mind as to the ability of the players in college who already have more or less of a reputation. The chief practice this fall will be in batting, though more or less field work is also to be done. Yesterday A. Dickinson '94 and R. E. Paine '94 were tried at first, Hapgood '94 at third base, P. W. Whittemore '95 at short, while J. B. Lowell '94 and Cook alternated at second. In the field were Paul '96, Gonterman '96, and Ames '96. Hayes '96, Griffin '96, O'Malley '96, Henry '96 and Winslow '96, will also be on hand.

Promise for a good nine is not very good just at present, but there is certain to be more enthusiasm than for many years, as no single position is assured to any single candidate. Corbett is the most promising catcher, and A. Highlands has the best record of any pitcher. For the infield, Dickinson, Paine, Lowell, Hapgood, Whittemore, and Cook have all played in 'varsity games Unless some of these men go into the outfield, all these positions will have to be filled by new men.
