Freshman Games.

The freshman track and field games yesterday were unusually good, at least so far as the track events were concerned. Only the bicycle race and mile walk were disappointing. The best track event was the half mile run, which E. E. Hollister won by several seconds in 2 min., 4 2-5 sec. He never ran a race before, and never had on a running shoe until this fall. The best field event was C. J. Paine's record of 5 ft., 8 7-8 in. for the high jump. The quarter by Mansfield in 54 3-5 sec. was also very good. F. McCarthy ran one heat of the hundred in 10 3-5 sec., and Denholm had practically a walk-over in the 220 yards dash, winning in 24 3-5 sec. In the three field events that were contested, Paine took two firsts and a second, Stickney two seconds and a first. In the other events no man won two prizes except Denholm, who got second in the 100 and first in the 220 yards dash. The 220 yards hurdle race and the running broad jump were put off on account of darkness. They will be contested today at 4 o'clock.

The only unusually poor events were the mile walk, in which one starter dropped out and Phillips, the only other contestant, finished in 8 min., 10 sec.; the bicycle race, in which there were five starters, one of whom has done 5 min., 43 sec. in practice. The winner yesterday did only 6 min., 8 2-5 sec. The hammer throwing never is very good, and this year was no exception. Stickney won by a throw of 68 ft., 7 in. In the shot putting Paine did 31 ft., 10 1-2 in., Stickney coming close behind with a put of 31 ft., 9 1-2 in.

The largest number of entries was in the hundred yards dash. Eleven men competed. The smallest was two, in the mile walk and the quarter mile run. The closest race was the hundred yards final, when McCarthy beat Denholm by one foot in 11 sec. In the quarter mile Blakemore finished close to Mansfield, and Southwick not far behind R. R. Hollister in the mile, though the time was much slower than what both men could have done, only 4 min., 58 2-5 sec.

No college records were broken, but the fact that most of the events were won in very good time, gives the games of yesterday a right to be called a complete success.

The most promising men are E. E. Hollister for the half mile run, R. R. Hollister and Southwick for the mile, McCarthy and Denholm for the sprints, Mansfield for the 440 yards dash, C. J. Paine and A. Stickney, Jr., for the high jump.
