The foundation of the society dates back to 1837. Since then the interest in it has varied. Two years ago it fell very low, but now has again revised and bids fair to continue. In '90 the use of a room on the second floor of Dane Hall was given the society, but they have since moved to their present quarters. The whole was carefully catalogued last year, and is conducted now, similarly to the departmental libraries in the college.
