There was a decided improvement in the playing of the 'varsity yesterday afternoon. This was particularly true in the general quickness of play. The elevens lined up with more than usual life, and there was a noticeable difference in the rapidity in which the ball was put into play. The backs were fairly quick in getting under way and in every way there was good aggressive work. All in all there was more dash and life than for a week or ten days past.

The prettiest work was done by Gonterman. He made three long runs of over sixty yards each. He followed his blockers closely and broke away from them only at the last moment, when there was no alternative. His dodging was quick and puzzling and he ran with good speed. Hoag, Beale and Corbett did well. Foster made one bad pass, but otherwise put up a very satisfactory game. His best work was the quickness with which he got the ball in play and his interference.

In the line all the forwards showed improvement, holding well and making good holes for the backs. Mackie and Acton were quick and effective in the interference. Lewis was not at centre. He has gone up to Amherst for a few days, and Winslow took his place, putting up a strong game and doing particularly good work in making holes. Manahan and Newell were as lively as ever in their defensive work and Newell made good gains on his tackle plays. Emmons and Stevenson blocked strongly and interfered in good style.

The second eleven in comparison with the previous practice games showed up weaker than usual. Many of the substitutes were worked in, and the make up considerably changed. Parker did perhaps the best work, playing about as well as he has at any time this season. Whittren, Collamore and A. Brewer also watched their ends carefully and made some good tackles. Fairchild was slow at quarter and did not run his team with as much snap as he might have. Phelan of the junior eleven played fullback, but dropped the ball badly and missed an easy tackle which resulted in a goal.
