The 'varsity eleven were given their first secret practice on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon. Returning from this they played two sharply contested halves with a team composed entirely of comparatively recent graduates who were formerly 'varsity men themselves, and who showed clearly that they had not forgotten how to play the game. Their individual work was often of a high order, and considering they had never before practiced together, their team play was fairly good.

For the first half the ball stayed well into the middle of the field, neither side gaining any distinct advantage. Finally Trafford kicked and Dunlop made a fumble of the catch. Hallowell, in old time fashion, was on hand to pick it up and make the touchdown and Harding kicked the goal, making the score 6-0 in favor of the graduates.

In the second half the 'varsity became more aggressive and good rushes by Waters, Clarke and Dunlop, aided by occasional gains by the tackles, resulted in a touchdown. The ball was punted out and Fairchild kicked the goal, thus tying the game. No more scoring was done by either side, but the advantage was clearly with the 'varsity. The ball was being pushed rapidly down the field and had reached the five yard line when time was called.

The defensive work of the first eleven was admirable. The graduates failed to gain five yards in all during both halves, with the exception of the usual five on the opening V plays and Hallowell's run. The interference, however, was weak and failed to stand the test of good individual work. Clarke did the best rushing of the backs, but did not prove effective in the interference. Dunlop, too, can improve much in this respect.

Considerable "horse play" was indulged in by both sides, more than was good for the 'varsity. It is a waste of time and strength and is at the same time demoralizing.
