That four nines have entered for the scrub championship series and that they are desirous of having the series played, should be reason enough for organizing the series. One of the chief objections to holding the series would have been the fact that, as the matter had already been delayed so long, the scrub nines themselves might not be willing to give the time from their work for the finals; in which case there would have been no call for the series. But now that the nines have expressed their desire to play, the 'varsity management should carry out its original purpose and arrange for the games immediately. If matters are begun at once, there will be plenty of time to play the few games needed to decide the series before college closes.
Indeed it would be a great pity if the scrub series this year were to be given up. There are few enough chances offered at Cambridge for a man who is not a decided athlete to engage in any sports or games. To exercise with the 'varsity or with a class team, he must show a good deal of skill in the game, and the man who has not this skill but who wants sport and exercise finds very few chances to get it. It was with a realization of this state of things that Mr. Weld generously gave Harvard the Weld Boat House, a place of exercise for those who are not expert athletes. The new Soldters' Field also will increase the opportunities for this kind of sport. The very important factor, however, which must act in co-operation with these opportunities for sport is the offering of some motive in the shape of a championship. Most men want exercise and will take it whenever they get a chance, but where there is something to work for, the exercise will become much more general and interested; and the offering of just such a reward as a championship is the important factor needed to spread the active interest in sport and exercise among the greater part of the college.
If the scrub championship in base ball were done away with, it would take away no small stimulus to general exercise. This year, moreover, the nines have been practising with the prospect of being able to play each other in an organized series for some little sign of honor. It falls naturally to the place of the 'varsity management to undertake the slight duty of organizing the series and awarding the palm of victory, whatever it may be; and certainly it would be deeply regretted if the management this year neglected to see that the scrub nines had their set of matches.
