Harvard defeated Lovell's nine yesterday, in rather an uninteresting game, 8 to 1. The day was cold and raw, and the attendance was very small.
Wiggin pitched for the first time since the Easter trip, and did very well. He struck out eleven men, and seemed to have considerable speed. Upton caught him very creditably, on the whole. The battery for Lovell's was Kiley, an old Salem pitcher, and McKeever. Harvard's batting was not particularly good, most of the balls being hit into the air. Upton got two three-baggers, and there were five singles. Four men struck out. Aside from that there were twelve outs on flies. Harvard's fielding was good, what there was of it, but there were very few chances. Hovey played finely at short, and Cook at third.
Harvard came to the bat and got two runs in the first, on an error, a three-bagger by Upton, and error by short. Five more runs were made in the third, two of them earned, and the rest on well bunched hits, and a couple of costly errors by Lovell's. The final run was made in the eighth by Hovey on a single to left +++ a steal, and Sullivan's fumble of Dickinson's hit to left field. This ended the scoring for Harvard.
Lovell went out in one, two, three order for the first three innings. In the fourth, two men got on bases, but were left there, as Wiggin struck out Meagher, for the third out. In the sixth, Long got a two-bagger way out in center field. Corbett got the ball, which Hallowell could not quite reach, and threw Long out as he tried to make third. In the eighth, Lovells scored their only run by two two-baggers. The next three men went out and left Kiley at third.
