The freshman crew has been on the river every day, although the weather has not been particularly favorable, and is hard at work under the coaching of D. F. Jones '92. They are rowing about eight or ten miles every day.
The crew took to the shell a week ago Tuesday, but has not been doing especially well of late. Still the improvement is hoped for, and the hard work they are doing is the only way to achieve it. Attention is being paid more particularly to the general work of the crew without any attempt to develope speed as yet. The make up of the crew has not been materially changed. It is still exceedingly doubtful whether Cook will be able to row. No changes will however be made. Eddy will continue to row at No. 6, and if Cook is obliged to leave off rowing, Lambert, who was a candidate the first of the year, will probably be taken on as a substitute, Since Thomas went to the 'varsity, H. Frazier has been coxswaining the crew, and has been doing very good work. The crew is at Mrs. Bucknell's training table.
The make-up of the crew, together with the weights, now is:
Davis, Stroke, 156.
Purdon, 7, 152.
Eddy, 6, 179.
Grant, 5, 173.
Potter, 4, 171.
Briggs, 3, 156.
Richardson, 2, 151.
Cameron, Bow, 152.
Substitutes:
Cook, 170.
Ninde, 152.
The crew is still greatly in need of financial support. The class has been backward all along. Even after the class races, which would naturally have led one to expect support, if ever at all, the condition has not been bettered. The management needs $1000 to defray the expenses at New London, $700 of which has yet to be raised before the crew can go. At present they hope to leave for New London about June 10, that is, if the expected money is forthcoming; otherwise they will have to wait perhaps another week and this would allow only a very short time for practice on the Thames.
