The seniors won the first of the final series of games for the class championship on Jarvis Field yesterday afternoon, by a score of five to three, in what was the best played class contest of the season. By the score '95 appears to have put up slightly the better game, both at the bat and in the field, but both their hits and errors came at the wrong time, while '92 bunched their hits, and played their best ball at critical points.
The freshman started off like winners. In the first inning, after two were out, Rogers got a base-hit past Spalding, to second and third on two short passed balls, and came in on Wadsworth's clean hit to left-centre. Wadsworth stole second, but was left there, as Dreyfus hit weakly to Spalding, and was out at first. Until the sixth however, they got but two more men to first, both of whom were left, but in the sixth they made their second run. Rogers got to first on an error by Wood, a poor throw, but Spalding's good backing-up prevented his getting on farther. Wadsworth, however, sent him home by a lucky three-bagger to right-field, but he himself was caught between third and home by Curtis, Hollis and Brown, in trying to score on a careless return of the ball by Hollis. In the seventh Whiting added another to their score on Spalding's fumble of grounder, and Cummin's inexcusable fumble of Walker's clean hit to centre-field. Walker took second on the throw in, and third on Reed's sacrifice. Whittemore hit the first ball for what seemed to be a two-bagger to centre-field, but Lake spoiled '95's chances by the prettiest catch of the game after a long run from left. One, two, three was the order in the eighth. In the ninth Dreyfus hit cleanly to right-centre, and took third on Spalding's wild-throw in an attempt to force him at second on Cassatt's grounder. He tried to score on a short passed ball, by Hollis threw to Spalding and caught him just at the plate. Whiting struck out, and Curtis made a good catch of Walker's fly, in short leftfield.
For '92, Allen got a hit in the first inning, and stole second, but was put out trying to steal third after two men were out. In the second, Curtis made the first of his three hits, and took second as Dreyfus let it go by him. He stole third, but was left there. In the third, Spalding was hit by a pitched ball, stole second, and took third on Wood's sacrifice, but Allen went out, Cassatt to Rogers. It was in the third that '92 won the game, by knocking Coonley out of the box. Brown led off with a hit to centre, and stole second, and Curtis put another out to left, on which Brown took third. Lake hit to Coonley, who started to head off Brown at third, but found he was too late, and did nothing at all. Cummin followed with a sacrifice, which was too slow for Whiting to get Brown at the plate. Curtis, however, over-ran third, and Whiting, by a quick throw to Whittemore. caught him off the base. Lake and Cummin next made a double steal of third and second, and both scored on Rankin's pretty hit to centre. Rankin stole second, but there he was left on Hollis' strike-out, and Spalding's fly to to Whiting. In the fifth Reed took Coonley's place; Allen got in a hit, but could get no farther than third. Five pitched balls retired the side in the sixth In the seventh Hollis and Spalding got bases on balls, and by Spalding's steals of second and third and Hollis' steal of second were able to score on Allen's sacrifice which Cassatt went to sleep over. This ended the scoring, as just six men went to bat in the last two innings.
The features of the game were Spalding's good pitching, Lake's three running catches in left, Brown's pretty work at third, and Whiting's clean, quick plays at short stop.
