Base Ball.

Harvard, 4; Murray and Irwin's 3.

Harvard defeated Murray and Irwin's nine yesterday afternoon in a very loosely played game, by a score of 4 to 3. Scarcely anything can be said in the way of criticism. The whole game was lifeless, and devoid of interest, and whenever an opportunity was presented to make an error, it was accepted unhesitatingly. Highlands and Bates, on the contrary, pitched well for the greater part of the game, and between them struck out fourteen men. Mason caught Highlands, and for the first time this year, Trafford caught behind the bat. He did not distinguish himself yesterday, and it will take considerable practice to develop him into a really good 'varsity catcher.

Harvard came to the bat first and opened up the inning with three runs. Cook got his base on balls, and Mason followed with a scratch hit. Hallowell managed to get first also, while Cook scored and Mason went to third. Frothingham then got a very pretty hit and went to second, on the attempt to put Mason out at the plate, Hallowell going to third. Hovey was the next at the bat, and hit out a very hot liner to third, who not only managed to catch the ball, but also succeeded in catching Hallowell off his base, thereby making a double play. Trafford hit a single out to centre and Frothingham scored, Dickinson made the third out. Harvard's only other run was made by Corbett, in the second by a base hit, and a hand full of errors.

Murray and Irwin's nine did not score until the fifth inning. With one man out, M. Murray struck out but by an error of Trafford's got to first, stole second, and by an error of Hovey reached third. The next man struck out and then Cowling got a pretty base-hit out by third base, and Murray scored. In the next inning they scored again, Donovan getting a base hit, stealing second, and scoring on an error by Hovey and a wild pitch. The third run was made very similarly, on two errors, a sacrifice and a throw to put out Donovan. In the ninth they came near scoring again, but with a man on second one man flied out to Hallowell, and Bates struck the other two out.
