The candidates for the Yale freshman crew have now been in training for about a month. A. H. Swayne '92, is in charge of them and as soon as the weather permits, they will begin work in a barge on the harbor. There are at present quite a number of men in training but they will be gradually thinned out before the spring regatta. The following men are among the most promising:
W. M. Wheeler '95, 160 1-4 lbs.; G. A. Lewis '95, 174; C. A. Graham '94, Shef., 174 1-2; H. S. Johnson '94, S., 164; A. M. Beard '95, 184; Longacre '95, 168 1-2; L. Lowndes '95, 167; I. M. Goetchius '95, S., 154 1-2; S. T. High '95, 153; A. J. Ladd '94, S., 164; Pinney '94, S.
On the whole, says the Yale News, the men are slow in starting to recover and inclined to rush on last part of stroke. They do not hold shoulders well back at finish, do not put sufficient life into the stroke and do not pay strict attention to the coach. Their time is also very poor.
In addition to the men mentioned above the following freshmen are training with the University crew: E. L. Messler '94, S., 173; A. P. Rogers '94, S., 161; A. B. Shepley '95, 164; E. R. Folger '94, S., 166.
The candidates for the freshman nine began active training last week. Sheffield '94, Shef., was appointed temporary captain. The following men have handed in their names: G. E. Batchelder, Miller, Elliot, Chandler, Dwight, Brook, T. Peck, Warrington, Franklin, Bassett, Buckner, Speer, Richards, Holbert, Field, Bartholomew, Peet, Dennison, H. Lee, Marks, Dyer, Walworth, Adee, and Phelps. More are expected to begin training this week.
