On Monday afternoon Capt. Sexton called out the candidates for the Brown 'varsity and freshman base ball nines, the following being the 'varsity candidates:
Sexton, p.; Magill, 3b.; Steere, ss.; Jones, 2b.; Tenney, c.f.; Weeks 1b.; B. F. Thurston, c.; G. W. C. Hill, George, C. H. Ellis, Cooke, Feeley, Hamill, II. W. B. Arnold, McLane, Dyer, W. C. Hill, Stout, A. C. Matteson, R. H. Day, E. B. Aldrich, Cushing, Heathman, Meseroll.
From the above list it will be seen that four of the men who played against Harvard last year are not this year trying for the team, Woodcock, the famous pitcher and batter, Mendenhall, l.f., Messer, r.f., McDonald, l.f.
Last year Harvard played Brown four games, winning the two games at Providence 6-1, 8-3, and losing the games at Cambridge 4-6, 3-6. Capt. Sexton is determined to make as good a showing this year if hard work and conscientious training will do it. After giving the men a short talk on the advantages of systematic training he laid down the following rules which must be strictly followed:
1. All candidates shall abstain from tobacco in any form, intoxicating drink and general dissipation.
2. The retiring hour for candidates shall be 10.30 p. m. except one night in the week, when they may have till midnight.
3. All candidates shall report in the base ball room at the "gym.," ready for practice, at 4.30 p. m., every week day but Saturday.
