Appleton Chapel.

Rev. Philip S. Moxon and Professor Lyon conducted the Sunday evening service at Appleton Chapel. The former said that as it was necessary to choose a text he would take his from 2 Tim. II, 3, but he hoped the time would come when ministers would find their texts in their own hearts. "Suffer hardship with me as a good Soldier of Jesus Christ." This military conception was a favorite with Paul, and he also took many figures of speech from athletic contests. Life is a struggle from beginning to end. Man must work to get his daily bread, man must work for intellectual supremacy, and man must work for spiritual supremacy. In this spiritual contest Jesus Christ is, by divine fitness, the leader. The essential qualities for this struggle are courage, obedience and discipline. Physical courage is largely a matter of organization, but the courage to face one's highest ideal, to acknowledge Jesus Christ is of a far higher kind. Emerson once said: "The best way to confess Jesus Christ is to say nothing about Him." I sympathize with Him because there is so much hypocricy and cant, but nevertheless we ought all to come out and gravely place ourselves under our Leader's banner.

During the evening the choir sang the following anthems: "Bring Unto the Lord." - Gladstone; "Thy Sun Shall no More go Down." - Brown; "Lord We Pray Thee." - Roberts.
