Some indication of the work which the Christian Association has carried on during the first half-year may be gained from the reports read by the retiring officers at the last meeting. Before the term began, 2500 copies of the Association Hand Book was printed, and a copy was sent to every member of the Cambridge departments of the University including the incoming classes. During the first days of the term the Reception Committee occupied a room in the yard, and helped to welcome new students. At the State Convention which was held in Brockton, Harvard was represented by fifteen men. A paper was contributed to the Parlor Conference of College men; and, in conjunction with other students, our delegates conducted services in two churches.
Two of the preachers and four professors have addressed the Thursday meetings; and the association has received a deputation from Yale and Wesleyan. Sixteen regular, eighteen Sunday, and ten special meetings have been held, at which the attendance has averaged 50, 30 and 22, respectively. Four Bible classes, with 45 members meet weekly. Six delegations, in which sixteen men have taken part, have been sent to neighboring associations to conduct meetings. The Harvard member of the State Deputation has visited five of the colleges and preparatory schools of the State. The work among the sailors was carried on during the fall, and will be resumed in the spring. A quartette has been formed, which assists at the missions in and near Boston.
The committee system has been broadened and strengthened, and its work made more effective. The committee on visiting the sick, which was first organized last year, is beginning to meet the demands for it. Its members have made more than thirty calls this year. An important step has been made toward keeping a more accurate record of the membership. All those who are interested in the welfare of the association, and who desire to be considered members, are requested to sign the new membership book. The reading room of the association is supplied with sixteen daily, weekly and monthly periodicals; and is open during the day and evening to all members of the University.
