Herbert Tafts Allen of the Class of '86 was taken ill with peritonites in New York on Saturday and died yesterday morning. His home was in Somerville.
While at college Allen was prominent as an athlete. He pitched on the 'varsity baseball nine for one year and for the remaining three caught Nichols, Harvard's noted pitcher. He was on the famous nine of '85 which won every game played during the season.
Socially he stood high and was universally liked by his class mates who elected him their marshal at graduation. His genial ways and manly bearing commanded respect from every one. Those who knew him personally will especially mourn his loss.
