The football game Saturday afternoon was to many of the spectators a disappointment to some because they fully expected the B. A. A. eleven to score against Harvard, while to others the many weak points shown up and the very loose playing at times of the Harvard eleven were anything but encouraging. The warm weather was still with us and consequently only two short halves could be played. There were about 2500 people at the game and the good plays were met with much enthusiasm, Lee especially being cheered after each of his long runs.
During the first part of the game Harvard's play was exceedingly loose, fumbling the ball being the rule rather than the exception and there is no excuse for the quarter's passing the ball back into space. The men had the same tendency, to leave their places before the ball was snapped back, as they have shown in practice for the last few days, and consequently several times the signals had to be changed. This fault should be corrected if for no other reason than to save time. Then again at times several of the men would not enter into the play but just stand by and watch the other men do the interfering or tackle the opposing backs. There was also too much holding in the line and off side play. Harvard loosing the ball several times for these offences and once for interfering with the hands.
Most of the Harvard men played well and the tackling was on the whole very good. The interference was even better than in the Williams game and some very long gains were made around the ends by Lee, Corbett and Gray, these men making all the touchdowns. The best interfering was done by Waters, Trafford and Corbett. Trafford kicked five out of seven goals missing one very easy one.
In bucking the line Harvard was very successful and Waters, Traffard and Corbett often made good gains either through the centre or the ends of the line.
In the rushline Waters played well and also Mackie and Acton, the latter having a very poor man opposite him. Brice played a much better game at centre than in the Williams game and seemed to have but little trouble with Whitman. Upton played well and made a very good stop of one of McNear's punts. Newell and the ends also played good games. For the B. A. A., Waters and McNear gained the most ground and also did most of the tackling. Thayer Bellfield and Peters also played well.
