Dr. A. P. Peabody preached last night in Appleton Chapel from the text "I determined not to know anything among you than Jesus Christ and Him crucified," 1 Corinthians, 2 Chap.
Paul had a knowledge which we cannot find today among men. In knowing Christ he was not narrow; he knew God, he knew more of human nature than any one of us, his knowledge of ethics was greater than that of any man before him and he knew more of the life eternal, and all this from his study of Christ. From the crucifixion he learned the great truths of self-denial and self renunciation.
In our time men say we are beyond these things but the fact is that we have not reached the ground on which Paul stood. Men are either tending toward his position, in science, or away in such theological absurdities as that some men are under the ban of God, are predestined for eternal damnation.
Modern insurance companies, the treaties between nations, arbitration instead of war, all these are founded on Paul's interpretation of Christ and are indications of a tendency throughout the world toward Him and away from sin.
The choir sang the anthems: "I am Alpha and Omega," Stainer; "And the city had no need of the sun," Whittington.
