While all eyes have been on the football team since the opening of college, the candidates for the Mott-Haven team have been training steadily and making rapid improvement. The prospects are especially encouraging as about 120 men have presented themselves as candidates for the team. About half of this number are freshmen and persistent training begun so early in the season will undoubtedly develop some strong material. Most of the men of last year's team can be seen training on the track every day and their energies set a good example for the new men to follow. It is a long pull from now until next May, but training begun in the fall with a rest during the winter has proved in the past to be invaluable to a determined athlete. Some very good men are at present with the football squads but will be on hand as candidates for the team later in the season.
Brewer '96 has shown splendid form in the quarter mile and also the broad jump. Shea and Russell will be good men with the hammer and shot. The team is especially weak at the weights this year. Sayre and Whitehead from Exeter have records in the sprints and hurdles which prove them men of considerable ability. Garcelin shows good form in the sprints and Duffield will soon join his colleagues in the short distances. Riker L. S. and Arnold '96 run well in the half mile. The list of fair performers is large, but too numerous to name individually.
The entries in the freshman games guarantee some close and exciting contests. The team race between the four classes and the Law School will give additional interest to the sports. The captains who will have charge of their class teams respectively are: W. L. Thompson '93, S. M. Merrill '94, N. W. Bingham Jr. '95, R. E. Sayer '96 and J. O. Nichols L. S. After the 'varsity games, a series of weekly hare and hounds will be given. The number of these runs will be governed by their popularity.
