As every year the University adds more numbers to its classes it is interesting to give a glance also at the statistics of the last few year. We have made a gain this year in the freshman class and curiously enough this gain from the schools comes in the number put down as miscellaneous schools. For instance it will be seen that while we have made a gain from a few schools like Hopkinson, Phillips Andover, and St. Paul, there has been a falling off from many of the others. At the same time many of the miscellaneous schools are those which have hitherto sent no students to Harvard and further that a majority of them are in the western states.
Turning to the representation of the various states it will be seen that the greater increase has naturally come from Massachusetts. Taking into account however, the States north of the Ohio and west of the Mississippi River it is seen that the support has fallen off. '95 contributed 43 from these States and '96 contributes 40, the greatest falling off being in Ohio and Wisconsin. On the other hand there is an increase over last year's class in the States of New York, Pennsylvania, Maine and New Jersey, besides Massachusetts. We have also drawn students from Turkey, France, and the Hawaian Islands which were not represented last year.
On the whole these figures show a slight falling off this year from last in the number of students from the west of the Mississippi, but on the contrary a marked increase from the states east of that river. In spite of this, however, the facts that several States are represented this year which were not last year and that many more of the western schools are sending men to Harvard show nevertheless that Harvard influence in the west is still growing.
