WE cannot bring too strongly before the college the present condition of the 'varsity crew and its outlook for the future. Last year we suffered a crushing defeat; but that is in the past and to-day we must lay the determination to retrieve ourselves. But the crew is by no means made up and there are several vacancies which must be filled and for which the strongest call is made on men. There are good strong able-bodied men among us who have taken no step toward trying for the crew. These men are needed and badly needed. The captain of the 'varsity has set his entire faculties on our success this spring, but he needs candidates for the vacant places - a large number of able-bodied men to choose from. There are, we repeat, such able-bodied men in college who have not yet come forward. Here is an imperative call to them, a duty which they owe to college athletics. We must make every effort this year, we must strain every nerve and personally sacrifice anything for this important contest; this year we must win. Then let every able-bodied man answer the call for candidates; every man is needed. Ninety-six has set us a good example; this is even a more important race and we must set ourselves doggedly and determinedly to win it. There is need in the very highest degree for the best candidates and to every individual strong and able-bodied man in college we present this imperative duty and trust that he is so heart and soul in the determination to win this year that he will answer this call of Captain Vail.
