With the close of the Christmas recess the athletic activity of the the college has taken a fresh start. While before the recess the gymnasium was practically only used by men taking private exercise and by the freshman crew, since the beginning of the term it has presented a very different appearance. The class crews have now all begun training, many men are at work for the Mott Haven team, and today the activity will be increased by the arrival of the candidates for the freshman nine. The men are all going into the work with a good deal of spirit. In the class crews the enthusiasm as shown by the number of men, seems to follow a law of inverse proportion to the order of the classes. This is only natural, as the older a class gets, the better the rowing material becomes known; the new men get more and more weeded out, and the places in the boat become more settled. This decreasing ratio does not by any means show a decrease of real enthusiasm nor does it mean that there is less chance for new men. It merely means that as compared with lower classes more of the new material has been thoroughly tried and sorted. Apart from the numbers of the candidates, the energetic way in which the men have started in with their work speaks well for a successful rowing season.
