To the Editors of the Crimson:
I wish to call attention to the lack of instruction on the floor of the gymnasium and the need of a regular man there.
There is at present no one at the gymnasium whose province it is to give regular instruction in indoor gymnastic work. Mr. Lathrop used to take it upon his shoulders and does now as far as possible, but the responsibility of training a hundred and twenty candidates for the Mott Haven team, so loads him with work after the Christmas recess, that he has no time for anything else. The result is that, unless a man has a fair knowledge of indoor work when he comes here, he has no chance to learn anything. The natural effect is to-kill his interest. He does not like to make himself conspicuous and ridiculous on the floor in trying to get the knack of some simple little thing without help or direction. The unvaried dose of chest weights prescribed soon grows distasteful, and the new man finally either stays away from the gymnasium altogether or appears perhaps once a week from a sense of duty or the need of a bath.
The Winter Meetings of the last few years have shown the result. Formerly, when Mr. Lathrop had more time to bestow upon indoor work, three interesting and well contested meetings were held. Now it is with the greatest difficulty that the officers of the H. A. A. can secure competitors in enough events for two meetings, and the standard in these events is often below that in some of the preparatory schools.
I understand that it is not want of money which prevents this appointment of a regular instructor. If such is the case I cannot see why something has not been done before. The effect of skilled individual instruction in awakening interest has been made sufficiently evident in track and field athletics. It is equally necessary in indoor exercise, and there is every reason to suppose that the same good results would follow it.
INTERESTED.
