The 'varsity nine played another good game on Holmes Field yesterday afternoon. It differed from Monday's in that our team hit the opposing pitcher unmercifully. Seven hits for a total of twelve bases in the first inning was a pace too hot to be kept up, but sixteen hits for a total of twenty five bases in six innings was not bad. After the sixth inning a new pitcher was put in for Woonsocket, and Harvard made no more hits. Bates was very effective except in the seventh inning. He was hit hard in the ankle by a tremendous drive from Connor's bat in the sixth, and this interfered with his delivery so that in the seventh he allowed his opponents to make a home run and a three base hit, and to turn these to advantage by a wild pitch, a dead ball and a wild throw to third. Cook also made two errors in this inning, one of them very excusable. This unfortunate inning excepted, Harvard played the errorless game which the college has come to look for. Hovey especially distinguished himself. He and Bates, aided by Dickinson, made a very quick double play, which elicited much applause. At another time he fielded a man out at first while there was a runner on third, keeping the latter close to his base by a very pretty feint. He shared the honors in batting with Frothingham and Dean. Dean made four hits out of six times at the bat two of them three beggers. Trafford has a bad finger and Dickinson took his place at first. The Woonsocket team was much the same as John Morrill's. which played here last Thursday.
