In yesterday's game with Boston the nine showed a marked improvement in their batting, making twelve hits and not one strike out, while their fielding compared very favorably with that of the professionals, especially in backing each other up.
Boston made two runs in the first inning. Long got his base on balls; Brodie got his base on an error by Hovey and stole second, Long having taken third. On Stovey's grounder an unsuccessful attempt to put Long out at the plate was make, Brodie taking third on the play. Sullivan flied out to Hallowell. Quinn made a base hit on which Brodie scored. Ganzel was out, Dean to Trafford and Lowe struck out.
For Harvard, Dean got his base on balls and at once stole second by a pretty slide. Hallowell made a beautiful sacrifice, with a slow grounder to Ganzel, sending Dean to third. Hovey made a base hit on which Dean scored. Hovey was out, Lake to Long, on an attempt to steal second. Trafford made a hit and went to second on Frothingham's base on balls. Dickinson knocked a long fly between left and centre which both men ran for and Sullivan finally muffed, letting Trafford home.
Boston did not score in the second, but Harvard made two runs on Long's fumble of Cook's grounder, hits by Dean and Hallowell, Dean's out at the plate and Hovey's two bagger.
In the third, Boston added six to her score. Brodie made a hit close by third and Stovey followed with one over second, which Hallowell allowed to go through his legs, giving each of the runners another base. Sullivan sent both men in by a two bagger, and came home himself on Quinn's single. Ganzell struck out and Lowe knocked a high fly for Dean. Lake got a base on balls, and then Clarkson cleared the bases by a long home run hit over the right field fence. Long got his base on balls, but Brodie ended the agony by a grounder to Hovey. In this inning Boston made five of her ten hits.
In the fifth, Boston made two more runs on Lowe's grounder, which went through Hovey, a hit by Lake, who was caught at second and Long's home run drive over the left field fence. Boston did not score again.
Harvard got two in the fifth, on Lowe's three errors, one a muff of Hovey's grounder, and base hits by Dickinson and Upton.
In the sixth, Bates made a hit. Dean followed with another but was forced at second by Hallowell's grounder, the batter going to first. Hallowell stole second and both he and Bates scored.
