The 'varsity crew of Columbia College rowed on the river last week for the first time. The men are all worked in pair-oared gigs till their form and stroke permit them to do work in the shell.

The freshman nine has been practising every morning during the recess. On Fast Day they beat a Cambridge team 13 to 12; on Saturday they beat a picked team 10 to 8; and on Monday morning they were beaten by the Cambridge Latin 2 to 1.

Last Wednesday Professor Norton lectured at the Institute of Technology on "The Culture required of an Artist." Tonight his subject is "Architecture as a Fine Art;" and next week he will talk on "The opportunities of the Architect in America."

In both Holyoke and Grays the number of vacant rooms is 20; in thayer, Matthews and Weld a little more than 10; in Hollis only 3; in Hastings 6; and in Stoughton 1.

Mr. John J. Hayes will give a reading of Shakespeare's comedies in Mason and Hamlin Hall, beginning April 21. He will read "Twelfth Night," "As You Like It," "Much Ado About Nothing," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

The performances of the Hasty Pudding Club in New York were extremely successful. On Friday evening and Saturday afternoon "Two Old Grads" was given with the larger play "The Obispah," and on Saturday evening the smaller farce was replaced by a scene from "Twelfth Night." The performances were well attended, and enthusiastically received.
