Yesterday the Harvard steam launch appeared on the river for the first time. Charley Hart went for it in the afternoon and came up just as the crew were about to put their barge into the water. The arrival of the launch made a different arrangement than was expected. Captain Perkins arranged the crew as follows: Stroke, Powers '92; 7, Kelton '93; 6 Vail '93; 5, Shaw '94; 4, Watriss '92; 3, Cummings '93; 2, Lynam, M. S.; bow, Newell '94. The captain and C. F. Adams, 2d, went in the launch and coached the men. The men rowed as above for about half an hour, when Captain Perkins got in at stroke, Powers taking his old place at 4. This order was kept up until about 5.15, when Newell went into the launch and Rantoul '92 took his place at bow.
Notwithstanding the many changes, the crew got together well toward the last and sent the barge spinning along in good style. The crew is steadily improving, getting better control of slides, and keeping better time. The chief faults as a crew now are lack of snap at catch, and not powerful enough turn on of shoulders.
