The exceedingly practical interest which both Yale and Harvard graduates take in the athletic welfare of their colleges is well shown by their last generous action. They have seen that it will be a good thing if Yale and Harvard can meet alone in track athletics as in other sports. They have, therefore, taken a step to bring about such contests between the two colleges. Although it is not definitely settled that the plan will go through, there seems to be no present reason to doubt that it will be tried. The colleges will certainly adopt the plan if they consult their own wishes first.
The plan seems to us to be a plain step towards a final dual league between Yale and Harvard. Harvard's desire for such an arrangement is known well enough. Any plan like this, therefore, which seems a tendency in the direction of a dual league, we heartily welcome. This present plan proposed for our track athletics, does not, it is to be supposed, preclude our competing in the Mott Haven games. Let our track athletic team contest in those intercollegiate sports as much as it likes; but first and foremost let us have our single contests with Yale. Let an arrangement be made whereby Harvard shall fight it out first with Yale in every branch of athletics; after that it is time enough to look for contests with other colleges.
