Until the Columbia freshmen made known their intentions regarding Harvard's challenge, Harvard could make no answer to the challenge from Yale '94. Now that Columbia has accepted, the matter of a race with Yale is still beyond Harvard's control. Whether or not she shall meet the Yale freshmen on the water depends wholly on Columbia's stand.

Harvard's position, however, should be clearly understood. She wants to row the Yale freshmen, and she has therefore given her assent to a "threecornered race," The Yale freshmen are our freshmen's rivals in foot ball and base ball. They are our natural rivals in rowing, and, as long as we have freshman contests, there is every reason for the establishment of a regular series of races with the Yale freshmen. We sincerely hope that Columbia will admit them into the race.
