Mr. H. H. Hunnewell has recently given the University $30,000 for a new museum building for the Arnold Arboretum. The building, of which the contract price is $28,700, is now being put up close to the main entrance of the Arboretum. In design it is simple, the style being free Romanesque. There are a basement, two stories, and an attic. On the first floor are two large rooms 35*40 feet, designed for the museum collections. The second story contains the herbarium and the library, with the director's office and working rooms between.
The basement contains the receiving and unpacking room, storage rooms, lavatories, and a furnace room with a combination hot water and steam indirect system of heating and ventilation.
All the finish of the two principal stories is to be of painted plaster. The woodwork is reduced to practical minimum, and brick walls and fire stops prevent the chances of a fire spreading. The outside walls are hollow, to assure dryness.
