Mr. Lathrop at the close of the freshman games yesterday afternoon remarked that the meeting had been most successful both in number of entries and in promising men. There were no records broken, and in some of the events the time was very slow, but the work of Bingham, Baker, Whitemore, Norton and Whiteside was very encouraging. Fenton also ran well and finished strong. With training he ought to develop into a fast runner.
Darkness prevented the completion of the programme, and the final heat in the 220 yards, and the throwing the hammer and the pole vault were postponed until today. Both the hurdle races were declared off, as no walk - overs are allowed in the freshman games, and only one man entered each event.
Twenty men were entered for the 100 yards dash and nearly all completed. The event was run in four heats. In the first heat ran, E. Slade, N. W. Bingham Jr., C. E. Mack, B. S. Priest and T. F. Allen. Bingham won, time 11 1-5 secs. Priest second. Second heat: A. Wertheimer, C. E. Bacon, P. Washburn, C. L. Hodgkins, H. W. James. Hodgkins won, time 11 2-5. Washburn second. Third heat, H. A. Bull, R. C. Grew, J. S. Coonley, E. S. Bach. Bach won, time 11 2-5 secs. Grew second. Fourth heat: A. L. Jackson, W. J. Daly. E. L. Adams Jr.; P. W. Whittemore, S. Weill. Whitemore won; time 11 1-5 secs. Jackson second. After the two mile bicycle race, the first and second men of these four heats ran in two heats. Bingham won the first heat; time 10 4-5 secs. C. L. Hodgkins second. Whittemore won the second heat; time 11 secs. Jackson second. In the final heat Whittemore showed more speed and won in 10 4-5 seconds. Bingham, who had also made the distance in 10 4-5 secs., was a good second.
In the two mile bicycle race F. S. Elliot was first in 6 min., 25 3-5 secs. T. R. Kimball second.
The one mile walk was made in excellent time, 8 min. 3 secs. Norton took the lead early in the race and succeeded in keeping ahead, though Whiteside braced and gained largely at the finish.
In the four hundred and forty yards run four men only, C. H. Baker, A. L. Jackson, N. P. Dodge Jr., and James, out of the nine entries started. Jackson ran finely for half the distance, but his 100 yards heats told on him and he was obliged to drop out. Baker crossed the line first. Time 54 4 5 secs. Dodge came in second.
There were only two contestants in the one mile run, D. W. Fenton and A. Lincoln. They ran very evenly together until within 200 yards of the finish. At this point Fenton rapidly drew away from his rival and won in 5 min. 2 3-5 secs.
The 220 yards dash was run in two trial heats, not three as scheduled. B. S. Priest won the first in 25 3-5 secs., with R. C. Grew second. In the second heat P. W. Whittemore had no difficulty at his 25 pace, and P. Washburn easily got second place. The final heat will be run today.
Meanwhile the field events were going on, and in the course of the afternoon three were completed. For the running broad jump B. J. Worman, F. M. Stein and S. B. McNear entered. Worman jumped the furthest 20 ft. 1 inch. Stein who took second place covered (16 ft. 7 1-2 inches.
E. James, A. H. Linder and P. W. Whittemore contested in putting the shot. Whittemore took another first prize, putting the shot 30 ft. 1 inch. Lidder made the next best put.
F. P. Howard won in the high jump, and B. J. Worman took second place. Howard's highest jump was 5 ft. 3 inches.
