In foot ball at Yale the second eleven, or "college team" has been giving the first eleven harder work, it is said, than the teams of the smaller colleges. Cochrane and Polk have been doing good work on the ends on the second, and Van Ingen is becoming well known for his long punts. Butterworth, a freshman, plays a quick game, and is especially sharp in his running and drop-kicking. Centre on the first eleven is being experimented upon, Stillman being one of the latest tried there.
A new idea has been developed in crew matters by Captain Gould of the 'Varsity. The fall races are to last four days, beginning October 21st, and will be rowed on Lake Whitney. Two eight-oared races will take place, one between the Academic and Scientific freshmen, and the second between the '93 and '94 crews. These races will be about seven-eighths of a mile and will be rowed in heats, one heat each day. About thirty men are training for the '95 crews, and the '93 and '94 men have been on the water for about ten days.
The academic freshmen are being coached by Swayne, '92, and the scientific by Balliet, '92, About twenty men will go into training for the 'Varsity crew after the fall races.
