The first day of the tennis tournament went off most successfully yesterday. In spite of the very large number of entries all but four of the matches in the first round, and three of those in the second were played off. Today it is hoped to get all the matches in the second and third round played, which will narrow the men down to the semi-finals. The managers of the tournament deserve great praise for the very satisfactory way in which they have done their work, so far, especially for the promptness with which they have got the matches played off.
