A more representative body from among the faculty could hardly have been found than those who spoke in Sanders Theatre last night to the students who are just entering the University. The idea of the meeting was an excellent one, and the results we are sure will be happy. This year the arrangements for receiving new students have been more complete and systematic than ever before. The work has been under the immediate charge of Professor Shaler, but he has had the help of able assistants from among both instructors and students. The result has been that, whereas in many former years the entering student in trying to arrange his new work has been beset with difficulties on every side, this year his path has been made clear and easy.
The final preliminary step in this way of preparing the new student for his work was taken last night when President Eliot, Professor Shaler, Professor Lyon, Professor Briggs, and Professor White, addressed the large gathering of new students. As representatives they spoke of the different phases of university life, showing how each depended for success on the other, and giving the true relations which should exist between the students and faculty. In short, no better opportunity of realizing the life and spirit of the University could have been given to the new students than that of last night. We sincerely hope that this custom once established will always be kept up. In no other way could the faculty representatives show so well to the student representatives what spirit the latter must gain to maintain and assure the honor, dignity and future of our University.
