Our 'varsity crew has been rowing for so long that it is rather astonishing to hear that the Yale crew did not begin work till last Saturday. Captain Brewster, who rowed No. 3 on the crew last year, has taken charge of the men, and has been coaching them with the assistance of Stevenson, who captained the crew in '88. When the candidates met last Saturday, they started in with pretty hard work. The first crew, in which there was one of last year's men, rowed for nearly an hour. About thirty candidates in all presented themselves for the boat. Of these there about ten who are especially promising. Five of last year's crew are in college this year; these are Captain Brewster, who rowed No. 3 last year; W. A. Simms, P. G., No. 2; J. A. Hartwell, P. G., No. 5; H. T. Ferris '91, No. 6; and S. B. Ives '93, No. 7. It is doubtful if either Hartwell or Ferris will be able to row this year. Ferris has not sufficiently recovered from a severe attack of inflammatory rheumatism, and Hartwell's duties with the Scientific School may prevent his rowing. Of the other promising candidates there are S. N. Morrison '92, and P. Klimpke '92, who rowed substitutes on the crew last year. Besides these men there are A. J. Balliet '92, and Hagerman, L. S., who has had two years' experience in the Cornell boat.
