The 'varsity played a dull and unintereresting game on Holmes Field yesterday afternoon. The work of both nines was listless. Harvard's play was marked by Cummings' effective pitching and the general poor base-running. The base runners paid no attention to the coachers at all. Lafayette played a very fair game, but her fielders made some costly errors.
In the first inning Rother got his base on balls, but was forced out at second by March's grounder to Dean. March took second on Clark's sacrifice, third on Wells' hit. Upton threw to first to catch Wells; Trafford threw to second and March came in. Howland made a lucky three base hit to centre in Harvard's half, but he was left on third.
Lafayette did not score in the second. In the third Clark was hit by a pitched ball, took second on Wells' second hit, third on Baxter's sacrifice and home on Frothingham's wild throw to first. Harvard scored first in the third. Cummings got his base on first's error, stole second, took third on second's muff of Linn's grounder and came in on Howland's double. Linn got his base on an error, stole second and scored on Howland's hit. Howland scored from second on Upton's hit.
In the fourth Frothingham got to first on a missed third strike, second on Cummings' hit, third on a passed ball and home on Dean's sacrifice. Cummings hit safely, took second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and home on Linn's grounder.
Neither side scored again till the eighth. Trafford dropped Alward's throw and Clark got first on the error. He took second on a passed ball, third on Baxter's sacrifice and home on Mackey's hit. Wells got a base on balls, took second on Baxter's sacrifice and scored on Mackey's single. Cummings made a hit, stole second and scored on centre's muff of Dean's fly.
In the fifth Linn made a good running catch, and made a pretty double play with Trafford.
