Harvard defeated Brown at Providence yesterday in a close but rather poorly played game of ball. It was Brown's Class Day, and a larger crowd was at the grounds than at any previous game this year. About fifteen Harvard men accompanied the nine.

Harvard played by no means a bad game in the field, and she batted well, but neither Downer nor Bates were very effective, and they were unable to keep their opponents down at critical moments. Each did about equally good work, both giving three bases on balls, and each being hit heavily in one inning. Harvard batted well, and Howland especially distinguished himself, making four hits with a total of five in four times at the bat.

Brown was first at the bat and scored once. Dowd hit safely to left, stole second, took third on a sacrifice, and home on a passed ball. For Harvard, Dean hit to right, stole second, and came in on Howland's two-bagger to right. Brown did not score in the next three innings. In the third Linn got base on balls, second on first's error, and third and home on Howland's hit.

Woodcock went in to pitch in the fourth, and Harvard scored six runs. Upton hit safely, took second on Mason's single, third and home on two errors by the catcher. Mason made a single and came in on errors. Frothing ham got first on an error, and reached second and third on the errors that brought in Mason, and came in on Linn's hit. Downer got his base on an attempt to put out Upton, stole second and came in on Linn's hit. Linn took second on the throw in, third on an error, and home on Trafford's hit. Howland got his base on balls, stole second, took third on Trafford's hit, and home on Alward's sacrifice.

At the end of the fourth the score was nine to one for Harvard. Aster that Brown crawled up rapidly. Magill hit safely, took third on Dowd's two bagger and home on Hovey's three-bagger. Dowd came in on Hovey's hit. Woodcock got his base on an attempt to put out Hovey at the plate, stole second, got third on Frothingham's error, and home on Downer's wild pitch.

Harvard did not score in the fifth, sixth and seventh. In the sixth Bates took Downer's place. In the seventh Brown made five runs and tied the score. Messer hit safely, took second on an attempt to put out Hubbard, third on Upton's error, and home on Bates' wild pitch. Hubbard got his base on Upton's bad throw to Trafford, stole second and came in on the wild pitch. Weeks got his base on balls, was forced to second, and came in on Dowds three-bagger. Magill was hit by a pitched ball and came in on the three-base hit. Dowd hit to right centre for three bases and came in on Sexton's little grounder in front of the plate. The score was now nine all. Harvard failed to score in the seventh. In the eighth Brown got two more runs. Messer made a hit. Hubbard hit a slow grounder along the fist base line which Bates picked up; he threw wild to first, however, and Messer scored, Hubbard taking third. Hubbard came in on Upton's muff at the plate of Bates' throw. In Harvard's half of the eighth Dean got his base on balls, stole second, took third on Linn's hit, and home on Howland's. Linn stole second and came home on Howland's hit. Howland took second and third on the error of centre who allowed the hit to go through his legs, and scored on third's wild throw. Trafford took first on the same error, and reached third on it; he came in on the catcher's wild throw to third. Harvard blanked Brown in the ninth, the feature being Frothingham's one-hand stop of a hot liner above his head. The score:
