Harvard won a five inning game from Marlboro on Holmes Field yesterday afternoon. The game was marked by Harvard's heavy hitting in the first inning, her perfect fielding and Marlboro's poor all-around play. Downer was in the box and pitched in fine form.
In the first inning Marlboro was retired on a double play. Dean made a two bagger to centre, took third on Linn's sacrlfice and home on Howland's. Linn and Howland each got first on the attempts to put Dean out at third and the plate; Alward's hit brought them both in; Upton sent a three bagger along the left base line and Alward seored; Mason followed up with a home run to right and cleared the bases; Frothingham was the second out; Downer was hit by a pitched ball, forced to second on Dean's base on balls, took third on third's error and was forced in on another base on balls.
In the second, McLaughlin and Quinlan made singles, but were left on bases. Alward hit safely but Harvard did not score.
In the third, fourth and fifth Marlboro went out in one, two, three order. In the third Downer got his base on second's fumble, was forced to second on Dean's base on balls, third on Linn's sacrifice, and home on Howland's hit; Dean came home on the same hit; Linn got his base on first's error, second on hit, third on catcher's wild throw and home on Alward's sacrifice; Howland made a hit, took second on catcher's error, third on Alward's sacrifice and home on Upton's sacrifice; Alward got his base on the attempt to put Linn out at the plate, stole second and scored on Upton's sacrifice and Mason's single.
In the fourth Dean was hit by a pitched ball, stole second, took third on Linn's sacrifice and scored on Trafford's hit. This ended Harvard's run getting. Marlboro's half of the sixth was played, but just as Harvard went to the bat it began to rain. The score:
