Harvard defeated the Holy Cross nine yesterday afternoon on Holmes Field by a score of nine to four. Bates was in the box for Harvard. He gave a great many bases on balls, but pitched a fairly good game, nevertheless. Soule was back at short stop and fielded his position very cleanly. Alward made two bad muffs but they were partially excusable considering the state of his hands, two fingers having been knocked out of joint in the first of the game.
Meade was in the box for Holy Cross. He had to pitch in the face of many discouragements, for his fielders supported him wretchedly. The Holy Cross team batted well.
Harvard was first at the bat and was shut out, although Linn got around to third on a hit, a steal and a sacrifice. Mahoney made a two base hit for Holy Cross, but got no farther than the second bag. In the second inning the Holy Cross infield went to pieces. Alward got his base on third's error, stole second and came in on sacrifices. Short-stop fumbled Mason's grounder and the latter stole second, took third on Upton's sacrifice, and came in on a wild pitch. Upton got a life on third's error and stole second. He came in on the same wild pitch that had advanced Mason. Soule got a base on balls and took second on a passed ball. Another wild pitch advanced him to third, and Bates' good single to left brought him in. Bates got to second on left fielder's fumble, took third on a passed ball and came in on Linn's sacrifice. Five runs were made in this inning.
In the next, centre-field muffed Alward's fly and the latter stole second. He took third on Mason's sacrifice and scored on Upton's sacrifice. In the fourth Harvard secured another run. Linn reached first on third's fumble and stole second. The third baseman fielded Howland's grounder well but threw wild and Linn scored. Baker had made four errors at third for Holy Cross and Echeverrai was substituted for him.
In the fifth Mason made a hit and made the round of the bases on errors by right-field, pitcher and second base. Harvard made the last run in the eighth. Dean hit to centre, stole second, took third on Linn's sacrifice and tallied on a passed ball.
Holy Cross made her only scores in the sixth inning. Echeverrai got his base on balls and stole second. Merritt fouled out to Alward. Alward muffed Donnelly's pop fly. Halloran made a hit, sending Echeverrai to third and Donnelly to second. Boland flied out to Mason, who made a beautiful throw to the plate to catch Echeverrai, but Upton dropped the ball and the runner scored. Meade hit safely, bringing in Donnelly and sending Halloran to third. Upton threw to Dean to catch Meade, but Dean returned the ball wild and Halloran scored, Meade taking third. Mahoney made a hit and Meade came home. That ended Holy Cross's run-getting. The score:
HARVARD.
