The attention of the students of the university, and all others interested in Oriental history and language, is called to the new Semitic circular, which has just been issued under the direction of Professors Toy and Lyon. As will be seen by examining the same it is the most comprehensive schedule of Semitid studies offered in any American university. The attention of undergraduates is particularly called to the courses in history, which include the English Bible and the Spanish and Bagdad Califates. These courses, involving no knowledge of Semitic languages, are of greatest interest to the general student of history, although he may not be a specialist in Semitic studies. For the specialists, it will be seen that several new courses have been provided, including a course in the Phoenician language.
It should be further noted that the recent magnificent gift of Mr. Jacob H. Schiff, for the founding of a Semitic Museum will at once begin to supply the additional appliances for the completest and most practical study of the history, archaeology, art and sculpture of the Semitic peoples. The intention is to have here, and in position for use, casts of all the principal monuments and bas-reliefs that have come to us from Oriental sources. Profesor Lyon will spend the summer abroad for the express purpose of making the best selection possible. These, it is thought, will make this university the most thoroughly equipped place in America, not only for study, but also for original investigation.
A further interest is given to the circular by the announcement of several prizes, the gift of Dr. A. P. Peabody, for excellence in the work of this department. The Semitic Seminary will continue its work as usual, with the added interest of having immediately at hand the volumes of the Semitic Museum. Altogether it is a matter of congratulation that next year will find this branch of the work of this university in a condition so much improved.
