Base Ball.

Yale 8; Harvard 0.

The Yale team defeated Harvard at New Haven Saturday by a score of eight to nothing. There were only a dozen Harvard men at the game, and the support was overwhelmingly for Yale. The Yale team played a perfect fielding game up to the last inning, and their work in this particular was a strong contrast with Harvard's. Harvard's errors were inexcusable but they seemed more the result of nervousness than anything else. Her batting was by no means as weak as the score would indicate. Only four men struck out, and they hit the ball as hard and as often as Yale, but directly into the fielders' hands. Yale had very good luck in getting her hits between the bases, while their infielders had hardly to stir from her tracks except in two instances. The Yale men, however, played a much more wide-awake game than Harvard, and ran bases with plenty of dash. Upton backed up Downer well but was off in his throwing to second, and he allowed men to steal third on him several times Howland's work in center field and Dean's at second deserve especial praise. Mason made two good catches but his other attempts were too much on the grand-stand style, and were very disappointing. Downer pitched well except in the fourth inning, when he was very wild and presented Yale with several unearned runs. His infield support was, however, anything but steady. The Harvard men were also very careless in leaving the bases uncovered, and they showed less team work than Yale. A detailed account of the game follows:

First inning.- Mason was out by first, unassisted. Linn hit safely past first. Dean hit to short-stop, who, with second and first base, made the double. Stagg hit to deep center-field for what looked like three bases; Howland got under it, however, and caught the ball, although he fell in the attempt. The catch, which was a wonderful one, was warmly applauded by Yale. Calhoun hit a liner to left which Mason muffed. He stole second and third and came in on McBride's single to right. Howland made another fine catch of Dalzell's fly. McBride stole second but Downer caught him napping there.

Second inning.- Trafford was out by McClung's fine assist to first. Alward was out in the same way and Soule fouled out to Poole.- Poole hit a grounder along the first base line which Downer failed to get; he stole stole second and McClung sacrificed him to third. Cushing struck out. With two men out McClintock hit to Soule, who fumbled, and Poole scored. Trafford dropped Alward's throw on Owsley's grounder and McClintock took second and Owsley first; they were both advanced a base on Stagg's base on balls. Calhoun ended the inning, Soule to Trafford.

Third inning.- Upton went out, second to first; Downer made a scratch hit in front of the plate and took second on Mason's single to left, but both were left, Linn going out pitcher to first.- McBride flied out to Mason. Downer assisted Dalzell out to Trafford. Poole made a scratch hit, but was left, McClung going out, Alward to Trafford.

Fourth inning.- Harvard went out in order: Dean by third to first Trafford short to first, Alward on a fly to centre.- Cushing was given a base on balls and stole second, taking third on Upton's wild throw and home on McClintock's hit to left. McClintock reached third on a wild pitch; Owstey hit safely to centre. Upton dropped Howland's throw, which would easily have caught McClintockat the plate, and the latter scored. Stagg's base on balls forced Owsley to second. Mason made a good running catch of Calhoun's foul fly. A wild pitch sent Owsley to third and Stagg to second. McBride got his base on balls. Another wild pitch brought Owsley in and advanced the other two men a base. Dalzell's hit to centre brought Stagg home and McBride to third, but the latter was thrown out at the plate by Howland. Dalzell took second on the play and stole third, no one being near to guard the bag. Poole's single to left brought Dalzell home. Poole was out trying to steal second. In this inning Yale made five runs.

Fifth inning.- Soule was out, second to first; Upton flied out to second and Howland to short-stop.- McClung hit safely to left centre; Cushing flied out to Alward; McClintock hit safely to left and stole second: McClung took second on McClintock's hit and stole third; Owsley knocked a grounder to Alward, who overthrew first, and McClung scored, McClintock taking third. Stagg hit to Soule, who, with Dean, doubled Owsley at second and Stagg at first.

Sixth inning.- Downer and Mason struck out; Linn got his base on balls, but was forced out at second by Dean's grounder to Calhoun.- Dean made three pretty assists to Trafford and put out Calhoun, McBride and Dalzell in quick succession.

Seventh inning.- Trafford struck out; Alward fouled out to catcher and Soule flied out to second.- Poole flied out to Howland. McClung hit to Soule, who fumbled; he stole second, but was left there, Cushing fouling out to Upton and Downer assisting McClintock out at first.

Eighth inning.- Upton flied out to centre and Howland to second. Downer hit safely to center; Calhoun made a pretty play and fielded Mason out at first.- Owsley hit safely to center; Stagg hit to Soule, who, with Dean, again made the double; Mason muffed Calhoun's fly and the latter took second. Soule assisted McBride out at first.

Ninth inning.- McBride let Linn's grounder through his legs; Dean hit safely to right, who threw Linn out at second. Dean stole second, but Trafford struck out, and Cushing made a fine catch in right field of Alward's fly. Yale did not play her half of the inning. The score:
