The Worcester team of the Atlantic league defeated Harvard on Holmes field yesterday afternoon by a score of five to one. Harvard fielded well, although the out-fielders fumbled a good deal; but the men were entirely unable to hit the ball safely. Up to the ninth inning Dean's three-baggers was the only hit made by Harvard. In that inning Alward repeated Dean's performance and made a pretty triple. Trafford scratched a hit to the infield, and these comprised the sum total of Harvard's batting. Bates, '91, started in and pitched one inning. His arm was lame, however, and Downes, who took his place, also had a slightly strained arm. The consequence was that Worcester hit rather freely, although, with the exception of Kennedy's home run, not heavily.
Harvard was first at the bat. Mason fouled out; Linn got a base on balls and was thrown out at second; Dean was out second to first.
Alward made an inexcusable error and Jones reached first. The latter was forced to second on Campion's base on balls, and both were advanced by Staltz' base on balls. Cudworth and Meister flied out, and Bates assisted Kennedy out at first, three men being left on bases. Neither side scored till the fourth. Linn got to first in that inning on Lyston's wild throw. Dean sacrificed him to second. Dean was not out, however, and he and Linn were forced ahead by Trafford's base on balls. Linn came in on a passed ball. This was Harvard's only score.
In the fourth inning for Worcester, Spill, Guinasso and Lyston made hits in succession. These, together with Mason's wild throw, let in two runs. Lyston stole second, but Upton threw him out at third.
In the sixth inning Worcester scored twice again. Kennedy hit safely. Spill hit to Soule, who threw wildly to second to catch Kennedy, and the latter reached third. He came in on Guinasso's long fly to center, and Spill took third on the throw in. Lyston's hit brought him in. In the eighth inning Kennedy scored the last time for Worcester by making a clean home run on a line hit over Mason's head, out beyond the willows. The score:
