Harvard defeated Amherst yesterday afternoon on Holmes Field twelve to seven. Both nines played a poor fielding game, but Harvard excelled at the bat. Hare, the Amherst pitcher, became discouraged and careless in the fifth inning, and forced men in by giving bases on balls when there were three men on bases. Downer pitched a steady game, and was well supported by Upton, who threw finely to bases. The feature of the game was Soule's short-stop play. He had nine chances without an error. Alward was careless at third base, but batted well. Harvard's coaching in the field was not good.

Harvard was first at the bat. After Dean's out, the left-fielder muffed Linn's fly and Linn took second. Howland was hit by a pitched ball and both were advanced a base by a passed ball. Trafford sacrificed well, and Linn scored, Howland taking third. Alward's two-bagger to right brought Howland home. Upton flied out. Amherst got two men on bases, but Upton threw them both out at second, and no runs were made.

Harvard did not score for the next three innings. In the second Lacey knocked a pop fly between Soule and Downer. Alward was called for it but could not get it, and the man was safe on first. He reached third on two sacrifices, and came in on Trafford's excusable fumble of Brooks' low line-hit.

In the fifth Harvard got seven runs. Dean got his base on balls, took second on Linn's sacrifice, and third on Howland's hit. Linn got first on Downer's out at third, and took second on Howland's hit. With three men on bases, Trafford was given a base on balls, and Dean was forced in. Hare repeated the performance with Alward, and Linn crossed the home plate. Upton was hit by a pitched ball, and Howland was forced in, Trafford going to third. Mason's sacrifice sent him home, Alward to third and Upton to second. Both came in on a wild pitch. With two men out Soule got his base on Taylor's wild throw, and was forced to second when Downer was hit by a pitched ball. Dean made a single and Soule came in while the basemen were throwing the ball around the diamond.

In her half Amherst scored two runs on two singles, a double and a wild pitch. Amherst got her last run in the eighth. Mason muffed Taylor's fly. The latter reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on Cutler's sacrifice. Harvard scored twice in the sixth on a base on balls, a wild pitch, a balk, two sacrifices, Alward's hit and Taylor's fumble. In the last inning Mason hit safely, stole second and came in on Burns' error. The score:

In the class championship series yesterday the juniors beat the seniors by better batting and fielding, '90 scored 2 in the first by a base on balls, Piper's hit, Luce's muff of a fly and Lee's miss of a grounder. '91 followed and tied the score by Luce's hit and steal, a wild pitch, Mumford's miss of difficult grounder, and Butterworth's wild throw to catch Babbitt off first. After that the juniors scored in nearly every inning, while the seniors counted only one. '90 began the ninth with the score 8 to 3 against them, and after two men had struck out, three bases on balls and two hits brought in two runs and left the bases full, but the opportunity was lost by the third man's striking out.

In spite of the number of bases on balls, Luce held his opponents at his mercy until the last inning, and he was well handled by Babbitt. Butterworth was steadier, but was hit oftener, and was not so well supported in the field. Following is the score:

The freshman nine played a very fair fielding game against the Cambridge High and Latin schools team yesterday afternoon on Norton's Field. Ninety-three's batting, however, was weak. In the last inning, with three men on bases, the freshmen had a good chance to win the game, but a questionable decision of the umpire gave Cambridge a decided advantage. The score:
