Every Undergraduate Can Help.

A Timely Word from the New Reading Room Committee.

The following communication has been received from the New Library Reading Room Committee:

"The Advocate anticipates us in a request which we feel is worth the consideration of every man who is interested in doing something for Harvard. We refer to the editorial calling upon students to remember during the vacation the effort which their committee is making towards raising $150,000 for a new Library Reading Room. This is a matter which concerns every Harvard man, and, while the committee are doing all they can to obtain the requisite sum, that does not imply that they have no need of co-operation from the great body of students in general and from every student in particular. If each man would take it upon himself to interest those who through him would be interested in the upbuilding of his University-he would at least contribute a lasting blow to the stigma, "Harvard indifference."

Why cannot each man leave here with the resolve that he will bring back with him say, at least five dollars as the fruit of his personal effort in behalf of this work? While we doubt if many men who had made an earnest effort would return with so small a result, five dollars from each man would add materially to the fund and render for the University at large the benefit of a student testimony to the fact that Harvard cannot grow without funds.

If there is any man here who has never been in the present reading room to know for himself its inconveniences-we would suggest that he pay it a visit before he takes his vacation. If the lack of ventilation, the poor light, the crowded tables, the early closing, and the general inadequacies of the place do not rouse him to doing what he can for speedy change, Harvard has yet to awaken in him the first impulses of public spirit.

This is a suggestion for each student; it is to be hoped that on our return from the recess we can publish a result in which every Harvard man can justly be proud.
