The second vesper service was conducted yesterday afternoon by Rev. Henry Van Dyke, assisted by Rev. Brooke Herford.

At the end of the path of duty, said the preacher, is the gate of Heaven. The vision that turns men aside from that path is a mirage of the devil. There are two kinds of religion, one heavy with the thoughts of self, the other strong with love. There are some who use christianity as a narcotic,- it gives sweet dreams and lovely visions. The world has no need of them. The religion that follows and listens to Christ, that has a desire to worship God and help man, is pure and undefilable. If we are willing to come down at the voice of duty, and engage in distasteful menial work for men, then we know what transfiguration is.

The choir sang the following: Hark, hark my soul, by Barnby; I know that my Redeemer liveth, by J. B. Balch; and a duet for tenor and bass, Rejoice in the Lord, O ye Righteous, by Page, sung by Mr. Merrill and Mr. Swarts.

At the next Vespers, Garrett's Harvest Cantata will be sung.
