The greatest farce which remains in connection with the admission to Harvard College is the rule obliging candidate to file a certificate of moral character. This certificate amounts to nothing at all. Anyone can get such a paper, and the college is no more sure of the character of a man than if the certificate had never been presented. It is a piece of red tape at which every one smiles and which, if its doubtful moral effect and uselessness be considered, it would be far better to do away with.
