The Class Crews.

The seniors are working under a good many disadvantages. They have six men rowing on the 'varsity, four or five of whom will no doubt remain there. As a result of the drain the '90 crew does not look very promising. Of the eight which came in fourth last year only two men are rowing at present. Crehore and Tyson are sick, Vaughan and Sanford are not rowing and Captain Wells has to content himself with the pick of a very much picked over class. He has about ten new men rowing whose abilities it is not at present possible to judge.

The juniors are pegging away to the extent of five or six hundred strokes a day and running up to Porter's Station and back. They also go through some calisthenics every day. Exactly what they are trying to do on the rowing weights it is hard to say-a lively jerk at the beginning of the stroke seems essential. Of course it is absolutely necessary to keep the back straight and keep up a strong feeling of expectancy. Tallant and Hale are promising new men for the crew but they have much to learn in the way of rowing. Fitzhugh, Blanchard and Bass are also new candidates. The first two are now rowing on the 'varsity but are clumsy and are only likely to get into form with careful coaching. Several of last year's crew will no doubt row again, but all, with the exception of Parker and Randol, are either doing nothing or rowing on the 'varsity. The class of '91 seems to lack a good coach, but if this lack can be made up their material is good enough to make a good attempt at the class races.

The sophomores are working hard and have a pretty good looking set of men. Two or three of the freshman crew of last year are rowing with them and the remainder trying for the 'varsity. Their new men are good, some of them as good as the men who rowed on the freshman crew last year. Mr. Alexander coaches them once in a while so that their chances for victory are not very bad. If the likelihood of winning the class races could be judged from the material, the chances would probably lie between the sophomores and freshmen.
