At the request of several college oarsmen, interested in single scull racing, the captain of the University Boat Club has announced that a race will take place on Monday over the regular class race course for the single scull challenge cup. This cup was presented by R. P. Carroll '85, and J. E. Thayer '85 and has been shamefully neglected. It is at present in the hands of J. B. Fletcher '87 by whom it was won in the last race that of 1887.

No conditions appear to be attached the cup except that it is to be held by winner of each race for one year. No single scull race was rowed last year owing to total indifference to this branch of rowing, but this year so many men have been using single sculls during the spring that the Boat Club is encouraged again to place the challenge cup open to competition.

Monday's race deserves unusual attention. Single scull competition holds a prominent position among the branches of athletics in other colleges, and there is no reason why Harvard oarsmen should be behindhand in a sport which affords such excellent practice to men trying for the regular crew.

It is evident that to encourage this race is to broaden the interest in boating affairs throughout the college, an interest which is so essential to the welfare of the university crew.
