Spring Meeting of the H. A. A.

The spring meeting of the Harvard Athletic Association took place yesterday afternoon on Holmes Field. The Harvard record for the two mile bicycle race and for the pole vault were broken, but the east wind made the temperature too low for fast running.

The first event was the 220 yards hurdle race, (three quarters distance), the entries being E. B. Bodley, L. S., S. Wells, '91, A. S. Walcott, '91 and T. J. Stead, '91. The men got away well together but Stead struck the first hurdle which practically threw him out of the race. Bodley proved too fast for his compamons and won in 181/2 seconds. Walcott was second and Wells third.

The two mile bicycle race came next and proved to be the event of the meeting. The entries were K. Brown, '91, E. A. Bailey. '91. R, H. Davis, '91, W, B. Greenleaf, '92, and E. F. Rogers '90. At the start Greenleaf took the lead followed by Brown, Davis and Bailey in the order named. Their relative positions remained unchanged for the first mile, which was made in 3 minutes 11/2 seconds. On the next lap Davis and Bailey passed Brown whom they quickly left behind, but they were unable to get ahead of Greenleaf. On the last lap but one. Davis and Bailey passed Greenleaf who was thus forced to take third place. On the last lap Bailey made a beautiful spurt and when he crossed the line he was leading by about thirty feet. Time, 6 minutes and 1 second, which beats the best previous Harvard record by 11/2 seconds.

The 100 yards dash was contested by E. C. Moen, '91, C. F. Winslow, '91, J. P. Lee, '91 J. Cook, '90, and O. K. Hawes, '92. Moen took the lead and held it for the first seventy-five yards and then Lee came up abreast of him and managed to finish about a foot ahead of Moen. Time 10 3-4 seconds.

Then followed the mile walk for which C. T. R. Bates, '92, and J. E. Howe, '90. were the only entries. Bates had the inside track and took the lead. The men kept close together for the first lap. On the second lap Howe passed Bates and made the first half mile in 3 minutes 21 seconds, with Bates twenty feet behind him. Howe kept slowly increasing his lead and in spite of a determined spurt by Bates, Howe won by about fifty feet in 7 minutes 14 1-5 seconds.
